Welcome to REDCap!

REDCap is a mature, secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. Using REDCap's stream-lined process for rapidly developing projects, you may create and design projects using 1) the online method from your web browser using the Online Designer; and/or 2) the offline method by constructing a 'data dictionary' template file in Microsoft Excel, which can be later uploaded into REDCap. Both surveys and databases (or a mixture of the two) can be built using these methods.

REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.

Learn more about REDCap by watching a brief summary video (4 min). If you would like to view other quick video tutorials of REDCap in action and an overview of its features, please see the Training Resources page.

NOTICE: If you are collecting data for the purposes of human subjects research, review and approval of the project is required by your Institutional Review Board.

If you require assistance or have any questions about REDCap, please contact redcap@childrensnational.org.

REDCap Account Access at CNMC/GWU:

1. If you need only data entry access, please ask the study team to train you for the data entry process of the project and please fill out the account request survey https://cri-datacap.org/surveys/?s=D84XELYRE8 and we will just grant data entry access.

2. If you need full access, please fulfill ONE of the following requirements:

a. Attend the on campus hands-on training session (REDCap 101). Please go to this link for more information and please sign up at http://www.ctsicn.org/REDCapTraining.

Or

b. View the online tutorials and pass the exam with a score 75% or better. We can then grant full access. To view online tutorials, click on this link https://cri-datacap.org/index.php?action=training and then click on the individual tutorials. Once you completed viewing them, you can take the exam at https://cri-datacap.org/surveys/?s=ITio7Q. The exam could be taken at most three times. If failed after three times, you are required to attend the REDCap 101 training for full access.

The difference between data entry access and full access is whether you are able to create a new project/copy a project within REDCap. With full access, you can do that.

Below please find some CTSI-CN REDCap usage policies:

1. Users must be currently affiliated with GW* or CNMC or part of a project where the sponsor or PI is affiliated with GW or CNMC.

*A current employee of GWU or GW MFA or currently enrolled as a student.

2. All PIs of a project in REDCap that will have many users from other institutions must:

2.A) Provide a list of users who will request access to the REDCap team
2.B) Provide training for these users, and will inform the REDCap team how I am training these users.
2.C) Assign user rights to the new users and remove them after they are no longer with the project or work at CNMC or GW.

3. If a project for which REDCap will be used involves human subjects research, it has been submitted to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review or exemption and has been APPROVED before the project will be moved to production and data collection can commence. Additionally, the IRB number and study information must be input into the Main Project Settings information.

4. Users are not to share their passwords with others and will not allow others to use their REDCap username.

5. When users leave CNMC or GW or a project affiliated with either institution, they must notify the REDCap Help Desk or study PI so that they may be removed as a user.

6. Users have met one of the following REDCap training requirements:

6.A) Attended REDCap 101 at CNMC or GW.
6.B) Viewed the online video tutorials and completed the REDCap exam with a score of 75% or better.
6.C) If users have not received this training and have instead been trained by a study team or project PI, they understand that they are to only direct questions about REDCap to their project PI or project owner.

7. User accounts that have been inactive for 1 year (365 days) will be suspended.

8. Users that are sending a survey out to more than 100 respondents must email the REDCap team for approval prior to sending out the survey.

9. Users must cite the publication below in study manuscripts using REDCap for data collection and management.

We recommend the following boilerplate language:

Study data were collected and managed using REDCap electronic data capture tools hosted at Children's National Medical Center. 1 REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure, web-based application designed to support data capture for research studies, providing 1) an intuitive interface for validated data entry; 2) audit trails for tracking data manipulation and export procedures; 3) automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to common statistical packages; and 4) procedures for importing data from external sources.

REDCap Features

Build online surveys and databases quickly and securely - Create and design your project rapidly using secure web authentication from your browser. No extra software is required.

Fast and flexible - Conception to production-level survey/database in less than one day.

Export data to common data analysis packages - Export your data to Microsoft Excel, PDF, SAS, Stata, R, or SPSS for analysis.

Ad Hoc Reporting - Create custom queries for generating reports to view or download.

Scheduling - Utilize a built-in project calendar and scheduling module for organizing your events and appointments.

Easily manage a contact list of survey respondents or create a simple survey link - Build a list of email contacts, create custom email invitations, and track who responds, or you may also create a single survey link to email out or post on a website.

Send files to others securely - Using 'Send-It', upload and send files to multiple recipients, including existing project documents, that are too large for email attachments or that contain sensitive data.

Save your data collection instruments as a PDF to print - Generate a PDF version of your forms and surveys for printing to collect data offline.

Advanced features - Auto-validation, calculated fields, file uploading, branching/skip logic, and survey stop actions.

REDCap API - Have external applications connect to REDCap remotely in a programmatic or automated fashion.

Data Queries - Document the process of resolving data issues using the Data Resolution Workflow module.

Piping - Inject previously collected data values into question labels, survey invitation emails, etc. to provide a more customized experience.
